　　導演John Singleton最初是指定Wynton Marsalis來為基於1922年的種族騷亂事件而拍攝的本片進行配樂。但在Marsalis所作的有着沉思感的爵士樂主題曲缺乏影片莊嚴的氛圍後，導演轉而邀請曾因類似的歷史影片《辛德勒的名單》斬獲奧斯卡獎的配樂大師約翰·威廉姆斯。雖然不像《辛德勒的名單》那麼世界聞名，但本片的配樂依然非常優秀，通過令人驚奇的福音人聲、藍調旋律和小提琴、口琴、豎琴的應用，音樂真實反映了其根植於美國南部和美國黑人的文化元素。最令人側目的是由傳奇福音歌手Shirley Caesar演唱的三首讚美詩，其表演完全表達了影片所表現的在民權鬥爭中的的憤怒、痛苦和歡喜。
