　　导演John Singleton最初是指定Wynton Marsalis来为基于1922年的种族骚乱事件而拍摄的本片进行配乐。但在Marsalis所作的有着沉思感的爵士乐主题曲缺乏影片庄严的氛围后，导演转而邀请曾因类似的历史影片《辛德勒的名单》斩获奥斯卡奖的配乐大师约翰·威廉姆斯。虽然不像《辛德勒的名单》那么世界闻名，但本片的配乐依然非常优秀，通过令人惊奇的福音人声、蓝调旋律和小提琴、口琴、竖琴的应用，音乐真实反映了其根植于美国南部和美国黑人的文化元素。最令人侧目的是由传奇福音歌手Shirley Caesar演唱的三首赞美诗，其表演完全表达了影片所表现的在民权斗争中的的愤怒、痛苦和欢喜。
